I obtained my Humanities PhD just over a year ago. After numerous post-doctoral application rejections, I finally got a short-term, part-time research contract at a UK university. Although I enjoy my subject and research very much I have become disillusioned with academia so, after much thought, I have decided it’s time to depart. I don’t view this as a failure, but rather as an early realisation that having a doctorate does not have to automatically equal a career in academia; there is whole wide world out there for PhDs like me to live and work in!
My current contract ends in 2014 so I am planning my departure carefully – this blog will be my diary. I’m very excited about this new stage in my life and I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts with you.
